This intaglio is set in a 24 karat gold ring.
Facing right the profile bears a resemblance to the Emperor Augustus (reigned 27 B.C. - 14 A.D.), whose coinage shows him as having a youthful face, straight nose, beardless, with a strong, jaw and chin. The simple, but elegant laurel wreath designates, his royal status. As the first emperor of Rome, Augustus began the wearing of royal insignias; though, in his case, very modestly in deference to the sensibilities of, the Roman Senate. Royalty and aristocrats of the 18th century were certainly not shy about adorning themselves with jewelry, and an intaglio such as this (one would have been a prized part of a wealthy individual’s collection.
