The metates of the Guanacaste-Nicoya region are distinguished by their curved plate and intricate latticework. No matter what region they are from most metates were probably intended for ceremonial purposes, as is the case with this lovely example. The delicate geometric interlacing may represent the woven mat that was a common sign of authority in Meso-America. Certainly, the metate was an elite item made for and used by the upper classes for the grinding of food during ritual ceremonies. The elegant sweep of the plate is like the vault of the sky, while the underneath can be seen as the tangle of jungle growth with the mighty jaguar reigning supreme. As a symbol of authority and wealth, the metate served its owner in this world and the next; in the same way as the household furniture of the Pharaohs. An object with this much power transcends time and place; and is as beautiful today as it was hundreds of years ago. L. 49.5(19 1/2IN)
