This attractive female figure actually represents a deceased twin in much the same manner as Yoruba Ibeji dolls. They were often dressed and played with, by adults as well as by children. This example has a nice, glossy patina indicative of long use. The missing arm is in fact intentional - these figures were often defaced by their makers. The modelling is unusually carefully done, with the ornate hair, prominent buttocks and muscular legs picked out in exquisite detail. The face is scarred in a manner that would have indicated the person's geographical origin. This is an attractive piece of Ewe art.
