The metate is unique to Costa Rica. It is many things at once-- a useful household object for grinding corn and earth pigments; a ceremonial altar for internment; and a symbol of power for the wealthy classes who brought them into demand. The jaguar was the form in which they were made; the most respected and feared of the rain forest animals. This beautiful metate is a true sculpture carved from volcanic stone; known as a very difficult material to work with. The shape is pure elegance and graceful line, starting from the delightfully curved tail to the powerful jaws. The head shows the animal both fierce and defiant, lord of the rain forest, with its mighty teeth exposed. As such it stood as a symbol for the ruling classes of warriors and chiefs who protected the land and acquired new territory through warfare. When grinding corn or earth pigments, a person would be reminded of where the food came from and who supplied it. Now, it is the art lover who is reminded of a talented sculptor who could create something with such authority and presence; as mysterious as the great jaguar that still stalks the jungles of Costa Rica.
