A beautiful panel of Safavid ceramic tiles, decorated with a pattern made of crosses and eight-pointed stars made of intricate and elegant foliage. The bottom part presents a complex and elegant pattern of vegetal motifs.
These tiles were originally part of a much larger architectural decoration. The combination of crosses and eight-pointed stars was an attractive way to decorate large surfaces, favoured in Persia since the 14th century CE.
The abstract vegetal patterning of these tiles was produced in a time-consuming and elaborate process that testifies of the great cultural advancement and artistic prowess of Safavid crafstmen. An attractive earliercomparable (painted on slip with transparent glaze) is exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, acc. num. 91.1.106.
