The most spectacular enamelled objects of the Islamic culture were produced by Egyptian and Syrian glassmakers in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, especially from the mid-thirteenth to the late fourteenth century. Flat plates, such as this, were a rather common form of the Viennese Lobmeyr workshop. Its geometric decoration combines six circles drawn in a radial pattern around a central star.
The pleasant chromatic contrast of white and yellow enamels, and gilding emphasises the basic elements of both the geometric and the vegetal motifs of the design.
Circa 1880. Comparable Reference: Lot 231, Christies, Sale 7715, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 31 March 2009, London.
