EARTHENWARE

The Hispano-Moresque style vase is a product from the aesthetic movement from 8-15th century. Originated in Muslim ruled Spain. The ceramic in this style is famous for its luxurious, metallic luster-glazed appearence. It profoundly influenced the Spanish design and crafts, even after the Muslim period.

In the 15th century, The industry of Spanish pottery was highly developed. Potters accquired the skills of making copper lustre decoration and used in various purposes. This amphora-type vase is compiled with the hand-painted cobalt grape vines and leaf patterns. Not only these patterns are popular in the period, but also it implies that the vase is related to wine serving, flower display and other similar usages.

These ceramics are continued to be produced in the later period. Styles are blending Islamic and European elements. It was the most elaborate earthenware in the Europe until the Italian Maiolica Industry created a more sophisticated design. This amphora-type vase is a product made in the later period of time.

The motifs, stylised foliages remain the main decorative patterns. Besides, it recalls one of the vase from the collection of the Alhambra Palace in Granada.
