This Stone Relief depicts Surya (Sanskrit सूर्य), the sun and the solar deity in Hinduism. The iconography of Surya in Hinduism varies with its texts. Surya is typically depict as a standing deity in front of resplendent halo nimbus and holding a sunflower or lotus flower in both hands. In this relief, Surya is accompanied by his large attendants. His two wives Sanjana and Chhaya (or Rajni and Nikshubha) shoot arrows to challenge darkness. Also, Surya’s retinue Pingala and Danda are shown on his both sides. In this work, Aruna, the charioteer of Surya and personifies the red light of the sun, is not depicted. Instead, a female figure stands between Surya's feet in a place usually reserved for Aruna. She is Bhumi (or Bhudevi) perhaps, the Hindu goddess personifying the earth.
