Ornamentation of dancers in ceremonies was an important feature in an overall ritual. Artistic beauty and esoteric meaning were interwoven to create objects of profound intent. This is why sculptors were held in high esteem among the Pende; for they, like sorcerers, were involved both in the practical world of elements and the mystery world of the spirit. The Ghikhokho (passport mask), was worn on the arm and around the neck during ritual ceremonies. It denotes a mark of prestige, which is why such care was taken in its making. The expression on this particular mask appears as if the person is in a trance; a condition which dancers attempted to achieve in order to commune with spirits. It gives an impression of tranquility, almost ecstasy, and makes us feel we too are part of a mysterious dance ritual.
