A large Hellenistic terracotta statue of Eros. The figure is shown with extensive remaining pigment, colorful hair and a white ground throughout. The god, with his right arm raised and left lowered holding a ball, strides forward while in flight. The wings, now missing, would have been inserted into the back. The figure is tremendously articulated and emotes such an energy of movement. These finely moulded figures, often highly decorated, rose in popularity during the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. Common themes include fashionable women, gods and goddesses, heroic athletes, and bacchanalian merriment.
