The Bronze Sculpture of An Athlete is by Antonio Canova (1757-1822). As an Italian sculptor, Canova is regarded as one of the greatest Neoclassical artists. Canova's sculptures have contained a signature style that combined ancient Greek and Roman art practices with the early stirrings of Romanticism to delve into new path of Neoclassicism.
The bronze athlete depicts Creugas, the ancient Greek boxer who fought with Damoxenus in the Nemean games. Creugas is nude and in a pose with one arm raised above his head. He is wearing only a fig leaf and has a stiff expression. The sculpture embodies a considerable muscular tensions and encloses in his pose a dynamic energy and grandeur movements of athletes.
On the rectangular base, there is inscribed 'fecit Antonio Canova Roma 1792.' This Bronze Sculpture of An Athlete has similar form with the marble statue by Canova which is now in the Vatican Museum and the plaster sculpture bought by Pope Pius VII.
