This delightful vessel is composed of two animal motifs, the squirrel and tortoise. The squirrel's head protrudes from the main body of the vessel, beautifully created to capture the character of the animal. Attention to detail is most apparent in the way the paws are attached to the mouth as if he is eating a nut. The arms begin as solid and merge into the clever abstraction of simple black ovals. His tail and legs also verge between the real and non-real worlds; half representational, half fantasy. A finely decorated collar completes the design on the main portion. The squirrel is carried on the back of a tortoise that is facing the opposite direction. The painting on its body and shell is much more intense, showing iconographic elements mixed with realistic details such as scales on the head. The artist's inventiveness and skills are abundantly apparent in this vessel, and makes it irresistible to the eyes and to the imagination.
