Amongst all the art of the Pre-Columbian cultures, the art of Costa Rica appears to have the most interest in depicting lovely, fertile female figures. These figures most probably played an important function during fertility rituals. She is a masterpiece of balance, tranquility and warmth. Balance is represented by her steady, robust upright posture with symmetrical legs and arms. Her posture is relaxed and peaceful. She softly rests her arms at her tummy using her hands to frame the interesting symbol surrounding her prominent navel. The talented artist has sculpted such round, beautiful hips and shoulders. They perfectly balance the piece. The expression on her face is inviting and warm. Warmth also radiates from the glowing burnished orange paint, which covers her body. Intricate black paint designs emphasize certain areas of her body and may be a language within itself. She certainly is a woman of great importance. Her hat and earspools reveal to us that she is honored in her community. She looks as though she has had all of her dreams come true. There is a special energy of peace and beauty, which mystifies us and brings us to greater appreciation and adoration of the ladies who once lived in this ancient sophisticated culture.
