Burnished with a black slip, this earthenware trophy head demonstrates the realism that was so common in Costa Rican art. Their importance lay in the realism depicted and thus functioned well in warfare. The facial features are extremely realistic and the etching of the facial decorations into the blackened earthenware adds a beautiful color contrast as well as great decorative detail. This decoration is extended to the back of the head and down to the neck, allowing for an overall uniformity in the whole design.
