The artists of Costa Rica delighted in making vessels with human or animal faces. These objects can be viewed from a purely aesthetic perspective, and enjoyed simply as works of art. However, there was more involved for the artist and for the person who originally purchased the object or had it commissioned. Both creator and client were looking for something particular and special, to be reminded of an image with connections extending into the realms of myth and religion. The size of this charming vessel suggests it was made to hold personal items or as a container for fruits or nuts which can be easily scooped up with a hand. The almond shape of the eyes resembles those used for animals. Though the face is quite human, it may represent a deity or totemic symbol. It was believed the spirit of ancestors took the form of animals or humans with animal-like features, and was active in helping their living relatives through interceding in both the spirit and physical realms. It would be very comforting to have an image of such helpful entities around the house. Attractive designs made by incising with a sharp instrument add an almost floral touch. It is hoped the good spirit of this vessel will watch over its new owner, and bring prosperity and happiness.
