This bronze roundel holds within it the portrait of one of the most enigmatic and important figures in the ancient world, Alexander III of Macedon – also known as “The Great”. Set in high relief, Alexander stands out from the background, his head and neck filling the whole central space. His distinctive leonine hair takes up nearly the whole inner circumference of the roundel, and he is distinguished also by his deep-set eyes, a characteristic made famous by his contemporaneous court sculptor Lysippus. Such an item was probably used as wall decoration, a way of honoring the past memory of the great warrior and king.
