A finely carved and highly detailed portrait bust of Mark Anthony, one time would-be emperor of Rome, and tragic lover of Cleopatra. His tightly curled hair, bushy eyebrows, large nose, and stern expression are all reminiscent of the coin portraiture of the general. The stone used gives a flesh-like quality to the bust. As is typical of Roman portraiture his face is highly veristic, his well-lined brow a sign of his age, unlike now, considered a badge of honour.
