In 407 B.C., the three cities of the island of Rhodes (Camirus, Lindus and Ialysus) jointly founded a new federal capital on the northeastern edge of the island, and gave it the name of the island, Rhodes. The new city achieved quick prosperity, and, as the coinage of the island was concentrated on the new foundation, Rhodian coinage came to be one of the most important of the fourth century B.C.
