In 407 B.C., the three cities of the island of Rhodes (Camirus, Lindus and Ialysus) jointly founded a new federal capital on the northeastern edge of the island, and gave it the name of the island, Rhodes. The new city achieved quick prosperity, and, as the coinage of the island was concentrated on the new foundation, Rhodian coinage came to be one of the most important of the fourth century B.C. Here we see a stunning example of one of the Rhodian coins, featuring on one side, the dramatic portrayal of a head of the sun god Helios, the patron deity of the island. The other side of the coin is equally as stunning, depicting a lovely rose, a pun on the name of the city (rose in Greek is rhodos). Mounted in a regal gold and diamond necklace, this exquisite coin radiates a beauty that has its origins in the classical world--a world that continues to hold us captive in its magic spell.
