Justinian learned the art of imperial power under his uncle emperor Justin I. When his turn came to rule solely, he did so with remarkable skill and energy. During his long reign he solidified the empire, prevented Persian expansion, embarked on ambitious building projects in Constantinople, (including the construction of the great church St. Sophia), and the codification of Roman law.
