Inscribed within a circle in the painting “Ophthalmos” are the elements of yin and yang, represented in the form of a man and a woman. These imaginative figures are composed of and surrounded by the natural environment--seas, rivers, lakes, mountains, air and sun. For mankind it is essential to be responsible for our environment, one which is dependent on our maintenance and one which maintains us as well...a sort of yin and yang. The eye at the center of the painting calls for vigilance and awareness and symbolizes the collective human conscience. It is strategically positioned behind the female's head, for it is the female sensibility that tends to be more nurturing and caring. Surrounding this thematic circle are long mushroom-like trees, the environmental trademark of the artist, symbolizing the earth's long time span and the various stages in the dramatic evolution of physis, or nature.
