At first glance, the refined logic of a Leonardo da Vinci anatomical drawing is seen in the “Dark God of Logic”, as we view the complex rendering of a figure and its accompanying background imagery. The human-like form is portrayed by the artist, with outer skin and the underlying structure of muscles, bones and ligaments imaginatively depicted. Upon closer examination of this complex painting, the attendant mystical qualities begin to surface. We observe that the figure has four arms, characteristic of some gods in the eastern religious pantheon. The figure's hand gestures further hint at eastern mysticism, one hand facing palm out, another in a position that symbolizes peace. The trinity, an integral component of a variety of religions, is brought to mind as well, as our attention and emotions are directed toward the three dramatic faces that form the head of the figure, their combined visage at once commanding our rapt attention as it expresses the darker side of the spirit. At the same time, a pair of deep, piercing eyes examines us as we sense the divine power within this figure, his upper body surrounded by a nimbus, not unlike the halo that often frames the image of Christ. Complex emotions are triggered when we experience this painting, drawing us closer for a deeper examination of the art itself, as well as a deeper examination of ourselves.
