Elevated on three stout legs, this beautiful rare vessel is predominately painted black. Stunning abstract motifs decorates the exterior of the body: three reserved orange triangles filled by a series of black dots. Thin reserved spindles fan out along the edges of the triangle like the rays of the sun. The interior of the vessel has been painted with two bands: a wide black ring towards the top and a thinner red band beneath. The lip has been marvelously painted with a series of black dots recalling the interior pattern of the triangles. The painting technique utilized on this extraordinary Mayan vessel is closer to attic red-figure pottery than typical Pre-Columbian art. The majority of the body is painted black, and yet the focus is on that which has not been painted, the triangular motifs. The energy of the painting is simply stunning.
