Covered in radiant gold and standing in tribhanga, a pose of the three bends in dance, with hips swung gently to the right, this beautiful bodhisattva at once captures our attention. While his right hand is in varada mudra, one of the series of mystic ritual hand gestures of deities, his left hand grasps the stem of a lotus flower. His regal head and body are adorned with a stunning crown, necklace, earrings and armbands, all of which are dramatically highlighted with inlaid turquoise. A sash softly wraps around the Buddha’s hips, blending with the stem of the lotus as each hugs the side of his body. Standing on a gilt-bronze throne in the characteristic shape of a lotus, this spirited Buddha radiates a power and beauty that is positively mesmerizing to all who are fortunate enough to behold his exalted image.
