The spirits of the mother goddess hold sway over us as we experience Endre Szasz's painting “Life of the Cosmos”. A medieval woman, the manifestation of the great mother earth, stares into our eyes, her primal life-giving and regenerative spirit revealed through the foliage that comprises her headdress. Here we experience branches of a tree of life intertwining in a rhythmic pattern that echoes the cycles of nature. A small tree sprouts from the center of her headdress, while similar trees sprout from the ground on either side of the goddess. With their roots underground and branches rising to the sky, these twin images symbolize the three worlds of the cosmos, the underworld, the earth and the heavens. The imagery of the cosmos and its regenerative qualities are given potent expression in this painting. We sense the sacredness of life and the kinship we share with all others, including the mother goddess herself.
