Haunting sensations of a primeval sea are imaginatively expressed in this painted porcelain rondelle entitled “The Sea Below”. Our eyes are immediately drawn to the face of a god that emerges from swirling waves of light and shadow, his compelling visage evoking ancient aquatic mythologies. While waves undulate around him we notice that one of the slender images appears to be a seahorse, its open mouth releasing a series of luminescent bubbles that meander delicately amongst the waves. Meanwhile, tendrils of sea life also mingle in the aquatic environment, enhancing the aura of primitive mystery that emanates from this magnificent work of art.
