In the painting “Bird's Egg 1” we observe a strange looking dog, whose eyes gaze adoringly at an old woman, equally mythical in appearance. Ancient symbol of faithfulness, the devoted dog presents a gift to his master and with curly tail wagging he waits for acknowledgement from the old woman. As she cradles the gift in her slim, aged hand she contemplates its identity and meaning. The object is an egg, the ancient symbol of immortality. Clearly, this canine friend has given the old, wizened woman a gift of overwhelming consequence. Now she must decide her fate...keep this precious gift and live forever, like no other mortal, or willingly accept the ultimate finiteness of her life on earth. We watch her face and search for clues as to her decision. What choice would we make, given this opportune gift from the pet.
