Otherworldly in its representation, “Maya” incorporates the visual conception of Mayan glyphs into a surreal context. Most significant of the figure's features is the characteristic Mayan nose which appears repeatedly in Mayan art from great archaeological sites such as Tikal. Possibly, like self-referential glyphs, Szasz wanted to create his own depiction of the Maya; or perhaps it represents himself.
