This extraordinary silver coin was minted in the Region of Aeolis, an ancient Greek colony located on the northwest coast of Asia Minor. On one side we see the striking image of the diademed head of the Amazon Cyme, one of a legendary race of warrior women who originally came from somewhere in or near the Caucasus mountain range. The other side of the coin features the dramatic image of a horse in a prancing posture, his left front leg raised above a one-handled vessel. The animated horse is beautifully surrounded by a laurel wreath, while a Greek inscription completes the imagery on this side of the coin.
