The art of writing was fairly rare in antiquity, especially when compared to today. In Egypt's early history, those who could write (scribes) were accorded special honors. We know from Egyptian papyruses that some of the lower classes during the Roman period were literate. However, to write in a 'high-style' required a more thorough education, reserved for the upper classes.
