Sometimes artifacts survive from the past which seem mysterius beyond normal limits. As we puzzle over them, we cannot help but wonder what function they served, what concepts or beliefs they embody. They seem clues to a deeper reality, to secrets lost to the ages. This remarkable little sculpture has great vitality and an enigmatic subject. It shows two semi-human creatures, the smaller riding gleefully atop the shoulders of the larger. Their unusual heads and the remains of a curved tail suggest the chameleon or the iguana. Are these humans, parent and child, in festival masks? An illustration of some myth or fable? Animals embodied with human playfulness? The answer eludes us, but the magic of the piece endure.
