During the Golden Age of Athens, artists perfected the technique of vase painting we today call 'Red-Figure'. Pottery was decorated with black glaze, with portions of the natural red terracotta left exposed. Inner lines and details were filled in with fine brushstrokes, the application of which sometimes helps identify the artist. Subject matter included vivid scenes from mythology, history and daily life. This splendid fragment, clearly from a master atelier, offers a clue to the vanished glory of the whole vase. It depicts a winged spirit, perhaps a goddess of victory or marriage. Though we take pleasure in the elegant lines of this figure, we cannot help but wonder what the whole masterpiece looked like.
