This crouching male figure tells a story common to the people of Western Mexico. Although the sculpture is of a nobleman, his posture is pensive and defeated. He is not the proud man he once was. The key to discovering what is troubling him is to look carefully at his emaciated body. His back is beautifully, but painfully taut, his backbone and ribs betraying the awful truth of drought. We feel his despair. His position or power can not chnge the terrible conditions he is faced with. This piece lends a heart-rending testament to the sometimes harsh conditions within each culture and makes us realize how little the world has changed despite our technological advances.
