This flat-bottomed plate with its slanting sides and three rattle feet is the type of offering bowl used to honor the Mayan God of life and sustenance, the Maize God. Most late classic depictions of these plates do not show feet, but footed plates are typically shown in the Dresden Codex. Painted in red, orange and black paint on a tan ground, the image is the Maize God. Seated upon a table throne, he has supreme importance for every facet of Maya life for without his blessings of abundant crops, the Mayans could not survive. The fertility images painted on the slanting sides are calligraphic and expressive, and the relationship of the images to their circular field is graceful and sophisticated making this plate a noble offering.
