This clay figure from Costa Rica is a beautiful representation of a man. Although hundreds of years have passed since its creation, the lasting aesthetic beauty is still evident today. The sculpture displays magnificently smooth, burnished surface of reddish color that is decorated with fine geometric patterns. The body of the sculpture is adorned with intricate patterns rendered in incision lines. To complement such abstract enhancement, the figure itself is sculpted in a geometric, almost abstract, manner. The stance of the sculpture, standing proudly with the hands on sides of his torso, is undoubtedly expressive. And beneath the flat cap-like headdress is also expressive large round eyes, nose and a mouth which seems to carry a subtle smile. As beautiful and precious this sculpture is, it most likely represents a warrior or an import ant person of a tribe in Costa Rica. As we look into the sculpture, we not only appreciate the modern aesthetic qualities but also the ancient beauty that still captures our hearts today.
