This marvelous basalt sculpture of a female captures our eyes with its grace and regal essence. She wears an elaborate, flat headdress and her shoulders are decorated with incised patterns. Like a goddess, she stands with an essence of power, holding her breasts with her hands. In Ancient Costa Rica, the concept of fertility, birth and re-birth was very important. Many of their rituals, including sacrificial rituals, involved the idea of fertility and birth. Costa Ricans performed such rituals to please God, whom they believed to have absolute control over human beings and the agricultural fertility. This voluptuous figure of a woman seems to embody such concepts. Perhaps this sculpture stood in midst of an enchanting ritual like Goddess of birth and fertility. We can only imagine the significance this beautiful sculpture carried in the ancient world but its power and voluptuous, regal beauty is to last for times to come.
