The Teotihuacan artists created many intriguing works of art that still mystify us. And their stone figures, such as this fine example, are among the most perplexing. Their exact purpose is uncertain and what is known about them only adds to their mystery and fascination. Firstly, they come in male and female form, done in the same highly stylized, abstract manner. The females have slightly more detail, with some incising to represent clothing and intricately carved headdresses. The males stand at attention with arms at their sides, as if in the presence of something (or someone) awe inspiring This particular figure, which is truly a sculpture, has an expression of wonderment in his deep set eyes and parted lips. He wears a crown with circles radiating from the center and two horn-like protuberances. These horns are balanced by two similar extensions representing feet, which suggests the figure may have been there to be implanted in the ground or stuck onto a structure. The fact these small sculptures were found near temples, along with masks, indicates they were used in temple rituals as cult objects. His dignified pose and penetrating gaze seems as if he is beyond the material world, looking past us into another realm. Yet, his charm and intimate feel, held so comfortably in the hand, has the effect of taking us along with him on his quest.
