The Maya were fascinated with symbols. Their written language is composed of glyphs and detailed imagery which serves as a dramatic record of their culture. Objects made for the use of individuals and small cliques communicated information about the object and its user. Symbols on such objects could mark them as instruments of power and identify the owner's rank and role in ritual. Pectorals were an essential part of the flamboyant costumes worn by kings and nobles during important ceremonies. They hung in single or double rows from a belt and were considered signs of prestige and power. The glyphs on this lovely pectoral weave and dance about the interior of the glittering jade; enhancing the richness of both. It is solid and heavy, yet has the appearance of weightlessness, as if it is capable of fluttering in the breeze like the brilliant feathers kings wore.
