In Isaiah (10:11) it says: "Shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?" The Assyrians used to boast of their victories, and the destruction of the temples and idols of the vanquished peoples. This wide-eyed head, offered perhaps to Baal in Ancient Samaria, may have met just such a fate. As if trampled under the hooves of invading hordes, it appears to bear a look of eternal surprise. If only he could tell us of the fascinating events he has witnessed, of an ancient world filled with barbaric splendor.
