The two classes of Costa Rican society most crucial to its structure and stability were the warrior-chiefs and the religious shaman-priests. There is evidence to suggests that early in Costa Rica's history these people were one and the same. Gradually they separated, creating competition between them. Yet, the powerful shaman continued to be an active force in every sphere of life, as evidenced by the extraordinary statues made in their honor.
This remarkable statue shows a shaman wearing an owl or parrot mask. These wizards or sorcerers claimed the ability to change into wild animals in order to communicate with otherworldly spirits. This shaman is involved in a ritual, perhaps related to such a supernatural transformation. Every detail of the carving is quite wonderful and very expertly done. The mask is formed so beautifully it seems a separate piece from the rest of the figure. Swirls around the eyes effectively give the impression of energy, or a whirlpoo twirling inwards. The pattern also compliments those on the upper portion of the legs. Matching designs occur on the forehead of the mask and on the biceps. One very unusual feature is the large necklace he wears, which is probably a shaman emblem. His nakedness is typical of such figures; however the fact he is circumcised is not wholly unique, but quite rare. Considering this figure was carved from a huge block of resistant volcanic stone is remarkable enough; but add to it the power and force which brings to life an ancient shaman, the effect is truly astonishing.
