This elongated bronze statue depicts a male of tremendous rank. From head to toe he is adorned with elaborate jewelry and decorative scarification. His hair has been parted down the middle, gathered at the sides, and braided into an elaborate crown that wraps around his head and protrudes in the front like two small horns. The almond-shaped eyes and projecting, angular chin are typical of Gan bronzes. He wears a woven necklace with three pointed pendants that stick out. Perhaps these are animal teeth or even the tips of elephant tusks. The necklace, coupled with the bracelets, belt, and anklet all are signs of the figure’s status. His entire torso and back are engraved with a pattern representing his scars, another sign of status. Who is this man? He was probably a deceased ruler whose memory and spirit were both permanently preserved in bronze.
