This elongated bronze statue depicts a female of important rank. From head to toe, she is adorned with elaborate jewelry and decorative scarification. Her hair has been gathered into three rows and braided into and an elaborate crown that wraps around her head from the back and protrudes in the front like small horns. The almond-shaped eyes and projecting, angular chin and mouth are typical of Gan bronzes. She wears a necklace with three pointed pendants that stick out above her sagging breasts. Perhaps these are animal teeth or even the tips of elephant tusks. The necklace, coupled with the coral bracelets, belt, and anklets all are signs of the figure’s status. Her entire torso and back are engraved with a crosshatched pattern representing her scars, another sign of status. Who is this woman? Perhaps she was a deceased queen or mother whose memory and spirit were both permanently preserved in bronze.
