It is a wonderful and rare experience to be challenged by a work of art and at the same time feel a comfortable sense of intimacy. Senufo sculpture has that marvelous ability of drawing the viewer straight in, due to its elegant symmetry, form and balance. It is no wonder Senufo sculpture came into demand in Europe very early on and created the opening and flourishing of many studios. Large-sized sculptures known as Pombibele, or children of the Poro, are used for display in the Central Regions; and in the South play a dynamic role in rituals and processions. If this imposing statue were part of such ceremonies imagine the powerful effect it must have had. This mighty warrior with a knife held in his right hand is prepared for any foe. Yet, instead of appearing ready for battle, he seems already to have conquered, standing calm and reposed surveying his kingdom with pride; brave and proud he is naked except for the amulet around his neck probably containing a magical potion for protection against evil spirits. The elongated body and arms, short legs, conical hat and oval face all blend with remarkable fluidity and grace, which makes him seem in motion though standing absolutely still. Such dignity is timeless, immortal in polished wood, a guardian of strength standing for all time wherever he next stands guard.
