The hierarchical system found amongst the Lulua tribe is finely depicted within this marvelous piece sculpted with precision and care. The carvings are of animal figures and symbols. This trumpet was most likely used to announce the arrival or departure of the queen or of a female chieftain. The carving on this trumpet is truly fascinating in its rendering of the intricate design on the face. The large facial features are majestic and bold, suiting the regal status that this person holds. The woman's face is serene and captivating. The scarification around her mouth and the beautiful patterned design down her neck is impressive. These qualities along with the sheer craftsmanship makes one overcome with the sensation that this woman was highly respected. Below the woman's bust are two lizards going in opposite directions symbolizing maternity. To finish off this incredible work of art, the bottom of the trumpet is carved with a tribal pattern of criss crosses. Today we are still able to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the trumpet and symbolism, along with the crucial cultural role it played in the community of Lulua.
