In masquerades the interplay of artist, dancer and ritual magic join to express aspects of the real with the 'supernatural' world. In this impressive mask we may ask what is illusion and what is representative of reality. An animal aspect is exemplified by sharp fangs which curve outwards in a nice balance with the grinning mouth and the bold black moustache. The delightful wide eyes are very human and full of merriment. This impish quality is enhanced by the protruding tongue. Patterns on the cheeks of white, black and red lozenges on a green background enclosed in a white border add flamboyancy and flair. The exuberant joy of this mask will bring with it the magic of Ibibio masquerade anywhere it goes.
