Known generally as "Nkisi", this figurine is typical of power fetishes. A fetish priest, "Nganga", placed fetish materials in the abdominal receptacle (covered with cloth) and on the head, where the remains of vegetable material can still be seen embedded. Illustrative of the style are two constant characteristics of the Yombe: realistic features accentuated by inlaid glass eyes painted with a spot indicating the pupil, and the rythm of a zig-zag facial profile. The original body adornment and complete surface patina are not commonly found in sculpture of this type. Also noteworthy the full cloth body covering rarely intact on older examples such as this one.
