This lovely female made from blackened wood is resplendent with her elaborate coiffure and beaded necklace. She stands rigidly, knees slightly bent, arms pressed to her side. Her pose does not seem natural. This figure was probably used in a ritual meant to please the spirits. African art which is rooted in religion, never made images of the creator-god. Instead, they looked for a worthy form in which to transplant all the divine power. Perhaps this female figure was used for a fertility rite. Then as now, her dignified form is a wonder to behold.
