The cultural identity of the Suku people is complex and comprises many tribes. Their art, however, is quite distinctive, especially in the genre of masks. This remarkable mask represents the Suku artists' predilection for naturalistic forms done in a stylized manner. It is not only the color, but the 'fleshy' appearance created by bulging cheeks and very high forehead which gives the mask a very human quality. The size indicates that it was meant to be carried in processions and seen from a distance. In contrast to the bulbous contours of chin and forehand, the eyes and mouth appear quite small and are highly expressive; as if both are communicating something extraordinary. Above all, this mask is very dramatic, occupying its own space between realms of the known and unknown.
