Standing upon a circular base decorated in black and white triangles is a fine female figure. She wears a skirt painted white with a waistband of three “rings” highlighted in black and red. Her chest is bare and her prominent breasts are marked with two rows of short horizontal black lines. Around her neck is a thick collar touching the long, tubular ear ornaments. A very fine crested coiffure is suggestive of wealth and also provides an aesthetic balance to the entire group. Her clenched fists, in which she holds a fan and a striped cloth draped over her back, are firmly pressed on the heads of her kneeling children. Each holds a round object resembling a basket that may be offerings to a deity. Maternity figures symbolizing fertility and continuity are placed on altars or shrines to petition ancestors for children; or as offerings of gratitude for having been granted children, especially in the case of twins.
