This exquisite wooden ceremonial mask is a fine example of the art created by the Marka tribe (also known as the Warka). The hallmark of their art is the inspired synthesis of human and animal forms. Its themes are somewhat reminiscent of the knights, armor, and secret societies of the European Middle Ages. The style of this art is closely linked with Bambara art. This mask depicts a distinctively human visage that has been combined with zoomorphic elements. Horns emanate from the brow, and a stylized rooster's comb stands atop the head. Consistent with the style of Marka sculpture, this mask exhibits elegantly elongated facial features. The chin is exceptionally long and conical in shape, and the nose is prominent and rectangular. Above the ears are markings that appear to imitate ritual scarification marks. Along the rim of the face are perforations probably used to thread the straps that would secure it to the head of the wearer.
