The Kuba exerted a dominating influence over the culture of surrounding tribes, and among these "Kuba-ized" tribes, the N'dengese, living on the Lukenye river to the north of Central Bakuba, were unusual in not merely adopting elements of the characteristic Kuba decorative style, but making important new artistic contributions. Arising from this mixed culture are pieces such as this fly-whisk handle of darkened ivory, which has been transfromed from a functional object into one with great artistic value. This figure wears an elaborate headdress deeply cut back behind the ears, and exhibits scarification patterns on the forehead and temples, and rings around the neck, attributes which represent an idealized image of beauty.
